The site featured isolated cells, heavy iron doors, exercise yards and strict segregation intended to break the spirit of inmates. The atmosphere inside was deliberately intimidating, and over the centuries thousands of prisoners passed through its gates. One of the darkest chapters in Shrewsbury Prison’s history involves executions. Public hangings once took place outside the prison walls, attracting huge crowds. The final public execution connected to the prison happened in 1868. Later executions took place privately inside the prison itself.
