Standing in the heart of the Scottish Borders, Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum is a building with a surprisingly dark past. Despite its castle-like appearance, it was a working prison. Built during the 1820s on the site of the medieval Jedburgh Castle. It operated as the town jail from 1823 until 1886, housing prisoners accused of crimes ranging from relatively minor offences to serious crimes.

The prison was designed as a modern institution for its time, with separate areas for different categories of prisoners with the jailer’s accommodation positioned centrally so that staff could keep watch over the inmates. It eventually became known for its comparatively progressive design, with some even describing it as “the most comfortable jail in Scotland”. For generations, prisoners lived within these walls, while others worked here as jailers and staff. The cells, corridors and confined spaces witnessed fear, punishment, illness, separation and, for some, the final chapters of their lives.

Today, many of those original spaces remain remarkably atmospheric, giving visitors an opportunity to see the environment in which prisoners actually lived.

Many paranormal groups have witnessed shadowy figures, unexplained footsteps and noises, cold spots and also the feeling of being watched!
