Originally named the “House of Correction” at Northleach. It is situated on a cross roads of major routes and designed to serve rural Gloucestershire. Designed by architect William Blackburn and opened in around 1792 and housed prisoners of minor crimes with both male and female inmates. The “correction” aspect came from work discipline where inmates were made to carry out tasks like stone breaking and oakum picking. By the mid 1800s the site also functioned partly as a police station and on the site was also a petty sessions court.
