Revesby Abbey was founded in 1142 and the first monks to occupy the Abbey were from Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire. The Abbey was dissolved in 1539 due to mismanagement, ruin and decay.
Through time the Abbey passed through many hands and developed into a country house. Craven Howard built a new residential house at the former Abbey although not on top of the monastic remains. The house was eventually sold on in 1711 to Joseph Banks I. During the years 1843 to 1844 all the contents of the house were auctioned off including timber, furniture, paintings and cornices leaving the house in ruins.
The current house was built in 1845 in the Jacobethan style. This house was built on what is believed to be the remaining bricks of Craven Howard's house. Over time former house has also fell in to disrepair, passing through multiple ownership until 1999. The former owners are now in the process of repairing the damage caused by time and neglect.
